California man dies in possible drunk driving accident

One person died and another suffered serious injuries after a two-car accident on Oct. 24. The crash occurred around 10:05 p.m. on Highway 44 near the intersection of Millville Plains Road in Redding. A 35-year-old Palo Cedro man was traveling in the westbound lane of Highway 44 and crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, entering the path of a 2011 Subaru Impreza. The 35-year-old's 2002 Ford truck collided head-on with the Impreza.

The 68-year-old Shingletown man who was driving the Impreza was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. An emergency crew transported the 35-year-old man to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for the treatment of major injuries that included multiple fractures.

While the Ford driver was in the hospital, investigators determined that he had been drinking and was impaired at the time of the crash. California Highway Patrol officers said that they arrested the man and would file charges with the Shasta County District Attorney's Office. The man's blood alcohol content and the nature of the charges pending against him were not disclosed in reports.

Drunk driving car crashes, unlike many other accidents, are entirely preventable. Drunk drivers' negligence in getting behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol results in thousands of deaths each year, leaving families of the crash victims to deal with death-related expenses and the loss of victims' contributions to their households.

The emotional and economic damages following sudden deaths in families may lead surviving family members to consider filing suit against drunk drivers. Personal injury attorneys may be able to provide families with advice about the process of beginning wrongful death cases and seeking compensation after fatal car accidents.
