Head-on collision causes 2 fatalities in California

According to authorities, a collision that occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 in East Whittier fatally wounded two individuals. A 54-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus IS 250 when she was struck by a 1999 Isuzu Trooper driven by a 24-year-old man. The incident happened on First Avenue just north of the unincorporated county area of Candlelight Drive.

The California Highway Patrol advised in a written statement that the fatally injured individuals were from Azusa and Santa Ana. At the time of reporting, police were not sure whether alcohol played a role in the collision. The driver of the Lexus was traveling northbound on First Avenue when the driver of the Isuzu crossed over the double yellow lines into the first lane on the opposite side of the road in front of the Lexus' path of travel. The vehicles collided head-on; the two drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Fe Springs division of the California Highway Patrol stated that the accident would remain under investigation.

In a case like this where a fatality has occurred because of a car accident, it is probable that police may conduct an accident reconstruction in order to better understand what specifically lead to the accident. Investigators may use reconstruction evidence and toxicology reports to help them determine if alcohol was a factor and to what degree.

When an individual has lost their life in the accident, the family members of the fatally wounded individual may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the other driver or the driver's estate. An attorney might be able to use the completed police report to try to establish negligence on behalf of the driver who appears responsible for the collision. The family members recover compensation for damages caused by the auto accident.
