4 die on Highway 50 in crash caused by wrong-way Prius

Shortly after the California Highway Patrol dispatch received a call that a Toyota Prius was driving the wrong way on westbound Highway 50 in Sacramento County, the Prius struck a pickup truck head on. The CHP responded to the accident and reported that four people, a 19-year-old woman and three men, had died at the scene.

The woman had been driving her Prius for several miles in the wrong direction on the divided highway before the crash. A Hyundai Sonata hit the pickup truck carrying the three male victims right after its head-on crash with the Prius, but its driver survived. However, the second collision caused the truck to catch on fire. A highway patrol officer said a motorist stopped to give aid but was thwarted by the fire.

The investigation by the highway patrol will focus on whether or not drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident. The accident backed up early morning traffic approaching downtown Sacramento until the wreck could be cleaned up.

Sometimes a surviving family member of a person killed in a car accident has cause to file a wrongful death lawsuit against another driver. Such a lawsuit might recover compensation for funeral expenses and lost income to a household. An attorney could help a survivor determine if a wrongful death occurred by reviewing the accident investigation. If unsafe actions by another driver, such as intoxication, speeding or distracted driving, caused the accident, then that person and possibly an insurance company could be held accountable to the survivor.
