1 killed in wrong-way accident

A head-on collision in Azusa, California, led to the death of one man, the hospitalization of his girlfriend and another man being taken into custody. The accident and the ensuing clean-up shut down a California freeway from approximately 3:30 a.m. until around 7:40 a.m. on August 9.

Authorities said that the wreck occurred in the westbound lanes of the 210 Freeway near Vernon Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 1997 Honda Accord was driving in the wrong direction on the roadway when it collided with a 1992 Nissan 24DSX. The driver of the Nissan, a 19-year-old El Monte man, died at the scene, and his female passenger suffered moderate. She was transported to County-USC Medical Center.

The driver and the passenger of the Honda left the site of the car accident on foot. CHP troopers and the Azusa police followed up on evidence at the scene, which included identification that was left inside of the vehicle, and took the 24-year-old driver into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol approximately two hours after the wreck.
