California accident injures 4, possibly drug related

An accident in La Jolla on Aug. 21 caused lots of damage when a man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs sped through two red lights. However, no one was seriously injured in the crash. The 44-year-old driver and three others did suffer minor injuries, and authorities believe the driver might have used inhalants before the accident.

The accident occurred near La Jolla High School on Nautilus Street and Avenida La Reina at about 9:30 a.m. when a driver in a BMW lost control of the car while on a westbound Nautilus curve. The BMW crossed a median, struck a Mercedes SUV in the road and a car parked in a driveway, hit a palm tree and landed on its side after knocking down a power pole. Two blocks were littered with debris after the wreck, and someone with San Diego Fire Rescue said they were lucky to extricate the man from his vehicle since it rested on electrical wires.

The BMW driver received a foot injury, and the woman driving the SUV and her two children were the other injured parties. Neighbors say the speed limit in the area is 25 mph, and they suggested using flashing lights around the curve to remind drivers to slow down.

Witnesses in this case think the driver will face criminal charges after injuring others and causing a disturbance, but those hurt could also file a personal injury suit in civil court. This allows victims to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages when one or multiple parties are responsible for an accident. Negligent actions that may show one is liable for a crash include DUI, texting and driving, tailgating, speeding and ignoring traffic signals.
