Head on collision leaves 2 dead in California

A head-on collision left two people dead and one injured in the Coachella Valley on Nov. 28. Police believe that alcohol played a role in the deadly accident.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal car accident occurred around 2 p.m. on Grapefruit Boulevard near Palm Street when a GMC Savanna driven by a 56-year-old Coachella woman was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 23-year-old Mecca man. Police reports that the Mecca man had been driving recklessly on Grapefruit Boulevard just prior to the collision. The man had been traveling north when he hit a concrete barrier and a construction sign on the east side of the road before going over the double yellow lines and into the path of oncoming traffic.

The driver of the GMC died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries later that night. His 19-year-old male passenger was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. This was the second fatal accident in the area on the same day.

In fatal accidents such as this one, the family of a deceased victim might file a wrongful death claim if they can show that the driver liable for the accident was also negligent. Negligence might be demonstrated by the results of the police investigation. The wrongful death claim might also be filed even if the at-fault driver was killed in the accident. If the claim is successful, the family might receive awards for both economic and non-economic damages. Economic damages might include loss of support and services, as well as any medical, funeral and burial costs the family incurs. Non-economic damages might include loss of companionship, love and care.
