Woman dies, 3 injured in wrong-way collision on I-880

Law enforcement authorities with the California Highway Patrol reported that a 22-year-old woman was killed and three people suffered serious personal injuries in a wrong-way head-on collision on Interstate 880. The accident reportedly occurred on Feb. 6 at 12:34 a.m., just four minutes after a call came that a driver was driving the wrong direction on the interstate.

The 22-year-old woman, who was driving her 1999 Volvo, was apparently driving north in the southbound lanes near the Auto Mall Parkway. Before police could arrive upon the initial report, she evidently had crashed head-on into a southbound Chevy Silverado carrying three people. The 26-year-old East Palo Alto man driving the Silverado and his two passengers all suffered major injuries in the collision.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found the 22-year-old woman trapped inside of her Volvo, which was on fire. They attempted to put out the flames and rescue the woman but were unable to do so. She died as a result of the injuries she suffered in the accident and the fire. Officers have not released a reason why the woman was driving the wrong way on the interstate. They indicated that they have not ruled out the use of drugs or alcohol, however. The investigation into the accident's cause was continuing as of Feb. 6.

When a negligent driver dies in a major car accident caused by his or her own actions, other people who are injured may not realize they can still potentially recover damages to compensate them for their losses. In such a case, injured plaintiffs may name the deceased person's estate as the defendant in a personal injury civil lawsuit. The estate will then stand in the negligent motorist's place in defending against the lawsuit. In this manner, people may still be compensated for their damages.
