California man killed in head-on crash on Highway 88

A 28-year-old Lodi man was killed in a three-car collision on Highway 88 on Feb. 21. The accident occurred around 10:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the man was driving a 1998 Plymouth south on the highway near Harney Lane when he crossed into northbound traffic for unknown reasons, striking an oncoming 1992 Dodge. The Dodge then spun into a northbound 2013 Chevrolet.

The Plymouth driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Dodge, a 48-year-old Turlock woman, was taken to a local hospital with major injuries. The Chevrolet driver, a 66-year-old Lockeford man, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

A woman and a man driving behind the Plymouth said the vehicle had been driving erratically for several minutes leading up to the crash, first speeding up behind them and then moving to cut them off near Clements. They said the vehicle appeared to be traveling at 70 to 80 mph. Highway 88 was closed until approximately 1 p.m. as authorities investigated and cleared the wreckage from the scene. CHP was working to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

After a car accident that causes major injuries or death, police typically attempt to determine who or what caused the crash. The results of their investigation could be helpful to those who were injured in the accident. For example, if toxicology reports show the at-fault driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the crash occurred, a civil law attorney could use those test results as a basis for a personal injury lawsuit on behalf of the victims. A successful lawsuit could bring compensation for damages, including medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost wages.
