Preventing dog bites in California

Many people are bitten by dogs each year, and a large number of those who are bitten are children. Dog bite injuries can be very severe, and while fatalities from dog bites are rare, they unfortunately do occur. It is important for California dog owners to take preventative measures to keep others safe from their dogs. It is also important that people know what to do in the event that an attack occurs.

In 2014, 4.7 million people in the U.S. were bitten by dogs and 41 were killed by dog bites. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there were several common factors in the dog bite cases. Dogs are more likely to bite others when there is not a person present who is physically able to stop the attack. In many cases, the victims did not know the dogs. In others, the dog was not spayed or neutered. In still others, the victim was elderly or young and thus unable to restrain the dog. Other problems included dogs that had been previously abused by their owners or kept as residents rather than as family pets.

Dogs should be properly socialized by their owners. Children should never be left unsupervised around a dog, and they should be taught to never approach a dog that they do not know. As neutered pets are less likely to bite, responsible dog owners should make certain they spay or neuter their pets.

Those who are injured by a dog due to the dog owner's negligence may want to contact an attorney for help in determining how to proceed. In some cases, people may be able to seek and recover damages to compensate them for their losses through a personal injury lawsuit naming the owner as the defendant.
