Wrong-way driver causes fiery crash in California

Police in California say that a motorist was traveling at a high rate of speed and was proceeding against the flow of traffic on a one-way street when he lost control of his Honda Accord sedan and struck an oncoming delivery truck head-on. The man, who police only described as being in his 20s, suffered serious injuries in the fiery crash, and he was later reported to be in critical condition. The accident took place in downtown Los Angeles on June 20 at about 3:30 a.m.

Footage recorded by a South Central Avenue store's security camera shows the Honda traveling the wrong way on 16th Street at approximately 70 mph. The sedan is seen actually leaving the roadway in the moments before the accident. The footage also shows the delivery truck, which was carrying tanks of carbon dioxide, helium and nitrogen, burst into flames seconds after the collision. Police say that accident could have been worse had the truck driver not taken evasive action after seeing the oncoming Honda.

Initial reports do not indicate why the man was traveling so fast and against the flow of traffic. Police say that blood samples will be collected from the badly injured man and tested for traces of alcohol and drugs. The truck driver was said to be in fair condition after being transported to an area hospital.

The victims of wrong-way accidents often suffer debilitating injuries that require lengthy medical treatment and that may prevent them from working for considerable periods. When this type of collision is caused by an impaired, distracted or fatigued driver, an attorney representing an injured victim might file a lawsuit against the at-fault motorist seeking compensation for the losses that have been sustained.
