Car crash death rates in the U.S.

California residents who rely on their vehicles may be interested to learn that the rate of deaths caused by car accidents has declined over the past 13 years around the country. However, the U.S. still underperforms other wealthy nations in this regard.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 32,000 people died due to car accidents in 2013 alone. Other countries have made larger strides in reducing the car accident death rate. For example, the road death rate in Spain has been reduced by about 75 percent while Denmark has seen a reduction of about 64 percent in the past 13 years.

Researchers attributed the high U.S. road death rates to alcohol use and lack of seat belts. In fact, the report estimates that approximately 3,000 lives could be saved every year if all drivers and passengers used their seat belts. When it comes to the problem of drunk driving, the CDC suggested implementing sobriety checkpoints or even lowering the legal blood alcohol concentration percentage and enforcing the minimum drinking age. In the meantime, passengers and drivers should ensure that everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled up and avoid operating a vehicle when impaired by alcohol or drugs.

While there are many unsafe drivers on the road, plenty of other motorists do everything they can to drive as safely as possible. Even so, safe drivers can still become involved in serious car accidents. If it can be shown that another driver was at fault, a personal injury attorney may assist an injured victim in seeking compensation for medical expenses and other losses that have been incurred.
