Annual car accident death toll was higher in 2015

California residents may be aware that there has been a decline in car accident fatalities over the past decade. There were 42,708 car accident deaths in the U.S. in 2005 compared to 35,092 car accident deaths in 2015. The decrease in car accidents has been attributed to factors like fewer drunk drivers on the roads, greater use of seat belts and vehicle safety improvements.

Despite the 10-year decline in fatal car accidents, government officials say that they are concerned about the car accident data from 2015. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics, there was a significant increase in the number of car accident fatalities in 2015 compared to the previous year. In fact, the 7.2 percent year-over-year increase in car accident fatalities in 2015 was the biggest single-year percentage increase since 1966.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has asked researchers and safety experts to analyze the 2015 traffic fatality data to determine what can be done to prevent traffic deaths. Government officials already know that one factor that has led to more traffic deaths is more driving. In 2015, job growth and low gas prices led to a 3.5 percent increase in annual vehicle miles traveled.

Many car accidents are caused by drivers who are operating their vehicles negligently. Whether a driver was intoxicated, distracted or knowingly disobeying traffic laws before the accident, the negligent driver may be sued by the people that they injured. An attorney may assist an injured car accident victim with a personal injury lawsuit against a negligent driver and help the injured party to pursue appropriate compensation for their losses.
