Collision between 2 big rigs inflicts grave damage

On Sept. 19, one man died and three people suffered injuries in a Northern California accident involving two tractor-trailers, according to officials. The accident reportedly occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Highway 299 in Round Mountain.

A semi-truck with a flatbed trailer hauling a load of construction was traveling east on Highway 299 when it lost its load attempting to negotiate a sharp bend in the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol. A container of the construction waste jetted onto westbound lanes of the highway, where a second semi-truck was approaching at highway speeds. The second semi-truck reportedly collided head-on with the first semi-truck's flatbed trailer, causing the first truck to flip over and the second truck to spill the content of its load onto the highway.

The driver of the second truck, a 50-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries in the accident, officials said. A passenger in that vehicle, a 45-year-old man, suffered injuries requiring hospitalization. The driver of the first truck, a man from Garden City, Idaho, and a 44-year-old passenger in the vehicle also suffered injuries as a result of the collision.

Police reportedly do not suspect that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident. According to CHP, the investigation into the wreck is ongoing.

In many cases, families who lose a loved one in a traffic accident must cope with more than just emotional anguish and grief. Bereaved family members must also deal with financial stress deriving from end-of-life expenses, such as funeral costs, as well as lost earnings if the decedent had contributed income to the household. However, in the event that investigations into the accident determine that negligent or reckless driving contributed to the fatal incident, bereaved family members may retain a lawyer and pursue a wrongful death claim against the at-fault party, seeking compensation for the economic burdens associated with the sudden loss of their loved one.
